From sea level Karimunjawa looks like a single green hump. Climb a little and it turns into a map: the town and its harbour, the two Menjangan islands just offshore, and a scatter of smaller islets on a sea that goes from jade to navy.
Two easy viewpoints close to the town give you that view without a jungle trek. Both are family-run attractions with platforms, swings and photo props rather than wilderness, and both are at their best in the hour before sunset.
What to do: Bukit Love & Bukit Joko Tuwo
Bukit Love
A hilltop a few kilometres from the town with a giant “LOVE” sign, viewing decks and small cafés. The view takes in the west coast and the islets offshore, which is why it fills up towards sunset. It is unashamedly a selfie spot — and the panorama is real.
Bukit Joko Tuwo
A hill directly above the town and harbour, named after the skeleton of a giant fish — “Joko Tuwo” — that is displayed here; it is said to have washed ashore on the island. Platforms look straight down on the boats and across to Menjangan Besar and Menjangan Kecil.
Sunset with a drink
Both hills have simple cafés, and the hillside hotel near Bukit Love has a restaurant facing the sunset. A romantic dinner there is one of the few non-boat experiences you can book online in advance.
Pay respects at Sunan Nyamplungan’s tomb
In the hills north of the town is the tomb of Sunan Nyamplungan, the Muslim saint credited in local tradition with settling the islands. It is a pilgrimage site reached by a long flight of steps: dress modestly and behave as you would at any place of worship.

Getting there: Bukit Love & Bukit Joko Tuwo
- Both viewpoints are a short scooter ride from Karimunjawa town — Joko Tuwo is on the edge of town, Bukit Love a little further along the main road. The final approach roads are steep.
- Each charges a small entrance fee in cash.
- Guesthouses can arrange a driver for a combined viewpoint and mangrove half-day if you do not ride.
Insider tips
- Go on a clear afternoon. In haze or after rain the islands disappear.
- The access roads are steep; if you are new to scooters, park at the bottom and walk.
- Weekends and Indonesian holidays are busy with domestic visitors; mornings are quiet.
- Combine the two: Joko Tuwo first, then Bukit Love for sunset.
