Turquoise water and palm trees at Tanjung Gelam beach in Karimunjawa National Park

Tanjung Gelam Beach

Leaning palms, granite boulders and the island’s sunset

Tanjung Gelam — locals and maps also say Ujung Gelam — sits at the western tip of Karimunjawa island, about 20 to 30 minutes by scooter from the town. It is the beach from the postcards: coconut palms growing almost horizontally over white sand, water that shades from clear to turquoise, and a cape of rounded granite boulders at one end.

Because it faces due west, it is also the island’s sunset spot. In the late afternoon the island-hopping boats nose into the shallows, the warungs sell young coconuts and fried bananas, and for half an hour everybody looks the same way.

What to do: Tanjung Gelam Beach

Swim and laze in the morning

Come before noon and you may share the beach with a few fishermen and nobody else. The water is shallow and calm for most of the dry season, with a sandy bottom close to shore — good for children and weak swimmers.

Scramble over the boulders

At the cape, smooth grey boulders tumble into the sea and frame small pockets of sand. It is the best place for photographs, and for a quiet corner when the sunset crowd arrives.

Stay for sunset

The sun sets over open sea with a few small islands on the horizon. Buy a coconut from a warung and settle in. If you came by scooter, remember that the ride home will be in the dark on an unlit road.

Snorkel off the rocks

There is some coral and plenty of small fish around the boulders when the sea is calm. It is not the equal of the boat sites, but a mask is worth bringing.

Getting there: Tanjung Gelam Beach

  • By scooter: follow the main road north from Karimunjawa town and take the signed turning west; the last stretch is a narrow lane. Allow 20–30 minutes. A small parking or entry fee is usually collected.
  • By boat: the western island-hopping route normally ends here for sunset.
  • Without a scooter, ask your guesthouse to arrange a driver or a lift — there is no public transport on the island.

Insider tips

  • Bring small rupiah notes for parking, coconuts and snacks. Nobody takes cards.
  • Sandflies and mosquitoes come out at dusk; repellent helps.
  • Take your rubbish back with you. Bins are few and the tide does the rest.
  • A torch or a phone light is useful for the walk back to your scooter after sunset.

FAQs: Tanjung Gelam Beach

Frequently asked questions

Is Tanjung Gelam the best beach in Karimunjawa?

It is the best-known and the best for sunset. For emptier sand, try the beaches on the east and north of the island — see Annora and Bobby — or the sandbars reached by boat.

Can I swim at Tanjung Gelam?

Yes. The water is shallow and usually calm in the dry season. In the west monsoon, waves and debris can make swimming unpleasant.

Are there facilities?

Simple ones: a handful of warungs selling drinks and snacks, basic toilets and parking. There are no sunbed rentals or beach clubs.
